How to Solve This Nonogram

Nonograms (also called picross, griddlers, or hanjie) are logic puzzles that hide a picture inside a grid of numbers:

Start with the biggest clues. A row or column clue close to the full width, like the 8 columns at each edge of this grid, tells you most of that line is filled — mark those first.
Watch for the symmetric edges. The left and right borders here mirror each other, so once you solve one side you can often echo it across.
Work the overlap. When a clue number is more than half the line's length, the middle cells must always be filled no matter how the run shifts — mark those immediately.

Walkthrough: Your First Four Moves

Not sure where to begin? Here's exactly how Mr. Puzzle opens this grid. Rows are numbered top to bottom and columns left to right.

Clear row 1. It has no clue, so mark it blank.
Columns 1 and 15 (8). They have 14 rows to work with (rows 2 to 15), so 6 squares of wiggle room. That still means rows 8 and 9 are always filled.
Rows 8 and 9 (1 1). Columns 1 and 15 already give each row its two 1s. Mark everything in between blank.
Row 12 (2 5 2). That's 11 squares with gaps, leaving 4 of wiggle room, so the 5 always covers column 8. Column 8 (1 1 1) now has one of its 1s in row 12, so rows 11 and 13 above and below it must be blank.

When line-by-line logic runs dry, test the top. Ask whether row 2's run of 5 could start at the far left, then check columns 1 to 3. The clues will push back, and that tells you where it really goes.

Why It's Rated Hard

It looks simple and it's a mirror image, but almost every line is made of 1s and 2s, which don't give much away on their own. After the opening moves you'll need a "what if" test or two, which is why it's rated Hard.
