Arms Wide Open

Nonogram · Puzzle No. 134 · ThePuzzleSolver.net
Easy
A logic-grid picture puzzle (also called picross or griddlers). Use the number clues to fill in the correct squares and reveal the hidden image.

Each number tells you how many squares in a row to fill in that line, in order. A clue of 2 2 means: fill 2 squares, leave at least one blank, then fill 2 more.

How to Solve This Nonogram

Nonograms (also called picross, griddlers, or hanjie) are logic puzzles that hide a picture inside a grid of numbers:

This puzzle is a 15×15 grid — 15 squares across and 15 down. For the full method, edge logic, and tougher techniques once you're ready to level up, read our complete guide to nonograms and advanced nonogram techniques.

Walkthrough: Your First Four Moves

Not sure where to begin? Here's exactly how Mr. Puzzle opens this grid. Rows are numbered top to bottom and columns left to right.

  1. Row 11 (9). A 9 in a 15-wide row has 6 squares of slack, so wherever it sits it always covers columns 7–9. Fill them. That’s the snowman’s waist.
  2. Columns 5 and 11 (3 5 2). 3 + 5 + 2 plus two gaps is 12, leaving 3 squares of slack. The 5 can start no higher than row 5 and no lower than row 8, so it always covers rows 8 and 9.
  3. Columns 6 and 10 (2 4 2 1). 2 + 4 + 2 + 1 plus three gaps is 12, again 3 squares of slack. The 4 always covers row 7.
  4. Row 9 (1 1 1). You’ve just filled columns 5 and 11 in this row, and each one is a lone 1, so the squares on either side of them (columns 4, 6, 10 and 12) are blank.
Stuck? Click for a nudge

The whole picture is a perfect mirror image: column 1 matches column 15, column 2 matches 14, and so on. Column 8 (2 2 1 1 1 1) runs straight down the middle, so whatever you work out on one side, copy it to the other. Row 6 (2 5 2) is worth a look early, since its 5 always covers column 8.

Why It's Rated Easy

Every square can be worked out from the clues alone, with no guessing at any point. It’s a 15×15 grid with lots of short runs, because the picture is drawn in outline. There’s no single giveaway line, so you’ll build it up a few squares at a time, but the perfect mirror symmetry means every square you solve tells you a second one for free.

Spoiler: what does this puzzle hide?

Arms Wide Open solves into a snowman drawn in outline, with two coal eyes, a scarf, and stick arms flung out wide with a twig at each end. Below are two hollow snowballs, each with a coal button right in the middle. Mr. Puzzle drew this one himself, square by square, in his own nonogram maker. It makes a friendly companion to Cool Customer, the solid snowman in a top hat.
