Every nonogram solver knows the moment: the easy lines are done, the picture is half formed, and suddenly a full pass over the grid produces nothing. No row solves, no column solves, and the remaining clues just sit there. A well-made nonogram always has exactly one solution and always has a next step — so when you stall, the puzzle isn't broken. First, Mark Your Empties

The single biggest cause of a stalled grid is filling squares without ever marking the ones that can't be filled. An X is information, and crossings depend on it. Go line by line: wherever a run is complete, X out the cells on either side of it. Wherever a clue is fully satisfied, X out the entire rest of the line. Those new X's flow into every crossing column and row, and lines that looked hopeless a minute ago suddenly have only one legal arrangement left.

Recount Your Finished Runs

Next, audit what you've already filled. For each row, read its clue and count your filled runs in order — do they match, in both length and sequence? A clue of 2 4 with a filled run of three somewhere in the middle means an error crept in earlier, and every deduction made downstream of an error is suspect. Catching a miscount early is far cheaper than discovering it three lines before the end.

Re-Run the Overlap on Partial Lines

Most solvers use the overlap technique on empty lines at the start, then forget it exists. But overlap gets stronger as a line fills in. Once a few cells are X'd out, a run's leftmost and rightmost legal positions squeeze together, and cells that had no overlap before may overlap now. When you're stuck, redo the overlap check on every unfinished line as if it were new — using today's X's, not day one's empty grid. This one habit restarts more stalled nonograms than anything else.

Chase the Edges

Filled cells touching a border are gifts. A filled square in column one means the first run of that row starts right there — you can fill its full length and X the cell after it. The same logic works from any X: a filled cell trapped against a cross-out behaves exactly like a cell against the wall. When you stall, sweep the grid specifically for filled cells sitting next to a border or an X, and cash in every one.

Test a Two-Case Cell

When pure line logic dries up, pick one uncertain cell on a short, tightly constrained line and try it both ways in your head: if this cell is filled, what does the line force? If it's empty, what then? Often one branch immediately breaks a crossing clue — and a contradiction is a real deduction, not a guess, because you keep only what disproving the branch earned you. Stay on short lines for this; a two-case test on a wide-open line just multiplies uncertainty.

Keep the Grid Trustworthy

Finally, remember that a nonogram is solved entirely from your own marks, so your marks have to be readable. Work in pencil, keep fills solid and X's crisp, and dot the cells you're unsure about instead of half-committing. If you find a genuine contradiction — a line whose clue can no longer fit no matter what — it's usually faster to erase that region and rebuild it from its crossings than to hunt one bad square through the whole picture.
